Neighborhood Overview
Whispers of history float throughout the antebellum mansions and townhomes situated in Downtown Savannah’s Historic District. Mossy green oaks stand watch over the 23 green space squares that make up the majority of this neighborhood. The unique street design of the Historic District still holds to the original town plan established in 1733 by General James E. Oglethorpe, back when Georgia was still a British colony. Excellent public transit called The Dot is offered by the City of Savannah and allows us to zip around the squares from Forsyth Park to Bay Street. But why ride, when we can walk or bike? The stretch from Forsyth to the waterfront on River Street is only a little over a mile. Walking is the best way we revel in the exquisite architecture of the Historic Districts’ centuries-old structures.
While the history remains, these days, the area is abundant with all the economy, experiences and entertainment we could hope for. It is a fast-moving and animated hub. Many local companies are headquartered throughout the Historic District offering a bustling business community during the day. Students from the Savannah College of Art Design can also be seen walking to and from classes. This expansive neighborhood is home to the most distinct and well-known coffee shops in the area with one on almost every corner. It is also hard to bypass the boutiques and well-known national stores dotted throughout this area of town. We especially love the numerous fine dining opportunities, drinking holes, nightlife spots, music venues, and breathtaking views along the Savannah harbor to help us unwind from a busy day. The Historic District is truly a vibrant community with so much to see, do, and enjoy.
