It’s hard not to be charmed by Thunderbolt, a small riverside town with its own government and city hall. The city’s name comes from a legend about a lightning strike revealing a freshwater source on its bluff overlooking the river. This one-and-a-half square mile town sits within the Eastside of Savannah along the Wilmington River. It is well-known as a historic fishing village and shrimping district for Savannah, and this adds a quaint aspect to its character. But don’t be fooled by Thunderbolt’s smaller size and history…it’is no sleepy town. It offers a quirky and hip vibe with colorful coastal cottages, bungalows, and ranch-style houses. We love that it also has a number of apartment complexes, condos, and townhomes overlooking the marsh and the river. With its diverse residential offerings, marinas, scenic views, and local, iconic eateries, this area is popular amongst young adults seeking an affordable coastal lifestyle. 

Thunderbolt is bisected by the busy Victory Drive and is less than a five-minute drive to Savannah shops, gyms, cafés, salons, and major chains. We can catch live music on Tubby’s deck on River Drive or cruise down Victory Drive to see a concert in the garden at Coach’s Corner, a neighborhood sports bar. When we do want to slow down, we have options. During any day of the week, we can find our Thunderbolt neighbors fishing from the WE Honey Park fishing pier or putting in a skiff or kayak at the public boat ramp across the river. Thunderbolt is also home to the old Roberds Dairy Farm, which was fully operational until 1986. Accessed off Tennessee Avenue, this expansive, marshy wetland is filled with trails and is a popular dog-walking destination. Those of us that love breathing in the salt air every morning and becoming regulars at our favorite bars and food stops, love calling Thunderbolt home.
