Parents, Here’s What To Know Before Your Kids Start School in Savannah

Starting school in a new town can be a daunting experience, but not just for the kiddos. Which is why we’ve talked with families who moved here and enrolled their children in the Savannah Chatham County Public School System (and surrounding areas) for the first time. They shared the tips and tricks for other parents who are enrolling their children to make it a smooth transition for the whole family!

Registration

Whether you’re completely new to the area or just new to SCCPSS, look into the registration requirements for the area and visit ‘Register my child for school’. On that page you will also be able to find FAQs about registering your child for school in SCCPSS,  resident school zone information, document requirements and processing, registration help guides, residency information and more.

Back To School Expos

Another great way to get into the swing of things is to attend the SCCPSS Back to School Expo for public schools. This is where parents can find out information on uniforms and supplies, transportation, schedules and registration.  The Expo for the 2023-24 school year has already happened, but if you are planning on moving into the district in the future, be sure to keep this in your back pocket for next year!

Bell Times

Start the year off on a good note by knowing the bell times for your childrens’ schools for the 2023-24 school year. You can view and upload the official SCCPSS document here for the entire list of schools.

Bus Routes

If your kiddos will be commuting to and from school via bus- even if it’s just a few times throughout the year- you can keep track of the routes with the SCCPSS’s official bus route. You can also find updates,  the safety rules, staff directory, transportation forms, another place where you can find the bell times and more.

Academic Calendars

Review the 2023-24 school calendar to check for holiday breaks, teacher meetings and scheduled  day to day changes. They also list the days that grades are reported, due and report cards get issued as well as makeup days!

**Pro Tip: Download the pdf and link it to your Google calendar!

Back To School Shopping

Here’s a big one- and maybe a shocking one if you’re new to the area- the dress code. SCCPSS requires your children to be in uniform from Pre-k to 12th Grade. To see the full Board Policy Manual for SCCPSS Dress Code, click here. However daunting that may seem, the Savannah area has it down to a system. You can check out a full list for local uniform stores like A-1, Bahama Joes, Patrick’s Uniforms here.

Now onto the supply lists! Check out the SCCPSS supply lists for each grade to see what you will need for your kiddos. There is also a teacher wish list for each school so you can see if there’s anything you can grab as a back to school gift for the teachers!

Last But Not Least, Summer Reading.

Lastly, make sure that your family has their summer reading finished up before the school year begins. You can see which books they need to have read- this is a great bonding activity for the end of summer too! Check out the full list for SCCPSS summer reading here

We wish you and your family the absolute best back to school month ever and are so happy to have you in Savannah!
